The hydrangeas handcrafted by the folks in Jiuzhou, Jingxi, Guangxi, known as the “Hometown of Hydrangeas”, are exquisitely made. They are mostly based on red, yellow and green colors for the base and fabrics. The outer layer of the fabric for the petals is satin, and the inner layer is homespun cloth. The hydrangeas are filled with bean chestnuts, cotton seeds, grains and so on. On the 12 petals, there are embroidered mascots. Except that the selection of patterns for the middle four petals is not restricted, the rest follow the rule that “the upper four petals must feature birds, and the lower four petals must be beasts”. The hydrangeas made with this ancient and complex embroidery technique have vividly depicted patterns with a strong sense of three-dimensionality, as if the lively creatures are bursting out. They are the finest among hydrangeas. Jingxi hydrangeas once included extra-large ones collected by the National Museum of China. Moreover, super-large hydrangeas with diameters of 1.97 meters and 2 meters were specially made to welcome the return of Hong Kong and Macao, making them famous both at home and abroad.
